Honoring President Jimmy Carter

Vaccinate Your Family mourns the passing of former President Jimmy Carter, who was reunited with his beloved wife, Rosalynn, in Heaven on December 29, 2024, at the age of 100. Our nation, and indeed the world, owes President Carter a deep debt of gratitude for his lifelong dedication to serving the voiceless—those without access to healthcare or even the most basic necessities of life. Alongside VYF cofounder Rosalynn Carter, he worked tirelessly to build homes and even latrines for those in need, making significant strides in eradicating global diseases, including guinea worm disease.

President Carter was a steadfast champion of the vision shared by his wife, Rosalynn, and Betty Bumpers for a nation where everyone has access to life-saving vaccines. As First Lady of Georgia, Rosalynn worked tirelessly to ensure that every child in the state received timely immunizations.

During the Carter Administration, federal support for vaccine programs across the country was significantly expanded. When measles surged in the U.S. in 1991, Rosalynn co-founded Every Child By Two (now Vaccinate Your Family) and, alongside Betty Bumpers, spent the next decade traveling to every state, building immunization coalitions, and advocating for crucial public health policies at both the state and federal levels.

Throughout this work, Jimmy Carter was a constant and supportive partner, fully backing Rosalynn’s passionate efforts on behalf of the millions of children and families whose lives have been saved by timely vaccination.

Jimmy Carter was a true humanitarian. We will endeavor to honor his legacy through our continued public health service as we seek to protect people of all ages from vaccine-preventable diseases.

The Carter Center invites you to sign the official online condolence book at JimmyCarterTribute.org. Information about the schedule of ceremonies can be found at www.usstatefuneral.mdw.army.mil.
